If you hang around the freshwater lakes of the upper half of North America you are probably pretty familiar with the haunting and beautiful calls of the Common Loon. These are some of my favorite birds to watch, as I often see them in their breeding range, and they are usually in pairs or family groups. They are very active capable swimmers and divers. I have seen them go down for minutes and pop back to the surface an obscene distance away. Every time I see them up close I am also reminded of how impressively large they are. Some as large as 3 feet long with over 4 foot wingspan!
